The Duke University/University of North Carolina (UNC) Advancing Diversity in Aging Research Program is an innovative research training program designed to offer training and support to undergraduate students from varied backgrounds. By combining the unique strengths of both institutions, this program will promote the development of scientists from all backgrounds with expertise in aging research and equip them with the resources to optimize reserve and resilience among older adults.
The Duke/UNC ADAR program will provide sustained mentored research training for undergraduate students enrolled at Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill of all backgrounds.
The training will consist of three main components:
Mentored individualized “hands-on” paid experiences in aging research.
Weekly seminars aimed at enhancing skills and knowledge in aging and resilience research, and fostering career development
Facilitated engagement activities with peers, older adults, and the scientific community.
The Duke/University of North Carolina (UNC) Advancing Diversity in Aging Research (ADAR) program seeks to sow the seeds to develop scientists with expertise in aging and resilience research from all backgrounds.
A diverse research workforce fosters scientific innovation and improves the quality of research. It is also paramount for ameliorating health disparities, advancing science among all segments of the U.S. population, and enhancing public trust.
We will leverage our rich infrastructure and resource of multidisciplinary scientists at the Duke Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development and UNC Chapel Hill with expertise in aging and resilience research. Mentors will include faculty from these groups and affiliated units.
Up to six new students will be selected every year to participate in this two-year program. They will be paired with a primary mentor and will have access to a larger network of junior and senior scientists to serve as secondary mentors. Together the student and primary mentor will develop an Individual Development Plan with input from others in the mentoring team and the program’s Steering Committee.
